Business: The Art and Science of Relationships (BASR)

BASR is a multi-disciplinary, integrative high school business course infused with emotional intelligence, physical fitness and awareness techniques. The academic subjects become the vehicles for students to learn more about themselves, each other and how to navigate through life and career success.

"Legislation continues to support the myth of the all-powerful 3R's without providing support for the learning that takes place through personal quiet times and teamwork."
~  Gayle Temkin, BASR Project Director

The following required and elective courses are Texas Essential Knowledge Skills approved by the Texas Education Agency.
  • Introduction to Business Elective, one credit
  • Business Communications Elective, one credit
  • Business Computer Information Systems (BCIS) Required, one credit
  • Fine Arts (Dance) Required, one credit

Four credits are earned in eight to twelve school weeks. These courses usually meet other national education agency requirements.

BASR Student Testimonials

"Whenever I was restless, I used the technique to calm myself to go to sleep."

"It is very relaxing. It's like observing yourself above yourself. I saw how I created situations that unnerved me. I don't do that anymore."

"My brother asked me for five dollars. I gave him a single. After meditating for awhile, I said, 'Gee whiz how can I be spiritual if I'm so cheap.' I took my single back and gave him a five."

"Often I don't have patience to do my prayers wholeheartedly. When I do the technique, I have the patience to do my prayers like they count."

"Education is a lot more connected, secretive, and miraculous than we know. The mind, the heart, the brain, the spirit - all of these play a bigger role than we can now identify."

~ Dorothy Rich, Founder of the Home and School Institute in Washington, Learning Curve, Washington Post January 11, 2004, page B07

It was the only class that didn't tell me what to think but quieted my mind to think.
~ Fin Gunter, BASR Student
